Friday was a day of upsets as many higher seeds lost at the 2008 Boston Scientific Aquatennial Plaza Tennis Classic at One Financial Plaza (2nd Ave. & 5th Street) in downtown Minneapolis. Matches start again on Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a men’s doubles match. Admission is free.
Seven sites around the Section will play host to the 2008 USTA Northern Jr. Team Tennis (JTT) Area Championships during the week of July 14-19. The seven locations include Brainerd, Minn., White Bear Lake, Minn., St. Cloud, Minn., Shakopee, Minn., Anoka, Minn., Eau Claire, Wis., and Sioux Falls, S.D. Winners of the seven area championships, along with a pre-determined number of teams based on the size of the area championship will advance to the USTA Northern JTT Section Tournament July 28-31 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
USTA Northern member Jim Holden has completed Tennis In The Northland: The History of Boys' High School Tennis in Minnesota. This exciting compilation covers everything that has happened in the sport from 1929-2003. If you are a former or current high school tennis player, coach, or a fan of tennis, you will want a copy of this 75-year history of boys high school tennis in Minnesota. The book features narrative profiles of (1) all the singles and doubles champions; (2) prominent tennis coaches and families; (3) dynasty teams--Edina, Blake, Rochester, St. Cloud, Blue Earth; (4) Cinderella teams such as St. James and Minnehaha Academy and (5) girls who played on boys' teams before Title IX; and much more.
USTA Northern is seeking applications from volunteers for its Councils and Committees for 2009-10. Applications must be submitted to USTA Northern by October 1, 2008. Ruby Rott was just looking for a little competition. A local USTA League Tennis presented by Chrysler player, she had been to two National Championships over the years at the 3.0 level, but was still yearning to play competitive singles. She contacted USTA Northern Adult Tournament Coordinator Nancy Lundberg, who suggested she try her hand at the USTA National 65-75-85 Indoor Tournament in Kansas City.
