Welcome to the USTA Northern Tennis On Campus Program!

Here Come Da Fuzz! All across the country, college students are getting in on exciting coed campus leagues that allow them to keep that competitive edge burning and have some serious fun, too! If you played tennis on your high school tennis team and miss the competition or if you're new to tennis and are just looking to meet some new friends and participate in organized sports activity on your campus – this is it!

Week after week throughout the year, teams are competing against one another for bragging rights and also future advancement to the annual spring USTA's National Campus Championship. How does that grab your attention for a spring break fantasy trip? Next year it could be YOU! Here is what college students are saying about their campus tennis programs:

"Towards the end of high school, everyone kept telling me to play tennis in college. Lucky for me, my college’s club team was a great option for someone who didn’t want the commitment of varsity or wasn’t quite good enough for it, yet still wanted to maintain their game by playing a few times a week." – Amy Erskine, Birmingham, MI

"All of a sudden, after playing tennis competitively for years, I had no plans to play and I felt a bit lost. Then I learned about the club team and began meeting some really great people. I can honestly say that joining the club tennis team has been the most positive, fun and consistent group I’ve been a part of at college." – Katie Johnstone, Deerfield, IL

"Another great aspect of club tennis is the leadership opportunities it offers. The board includes many offices, one of which I held. A lot of work is involved, but in the end it was a great experience for me." – Stu Weissman, Tampa, FL

USTA Launches New Tennis On Campus Web Site

The USTA announced the launch of a new Web site designed to serve as a resource for the more than 450 college and universities and nearly 30,000 players who participate in a Tennis On Campus program at their school. The official Web site of the Tennis On Campus program, www.tennisoncampus.com will provide an array of resources, materials and information to help support the rapidly expanding non-varsity side of college tennis.

The Tennis On Campus program, launched in 2000, features co-ed teams participating in intramural and intercollegiate (club) play using the World TeamTennis format on campuses nationwide. Tennis On Campus also provides college students with opportunities for leadership development, social networking and rivaled competition.

Perfect for athletes who have not made the jump from high school to college varsity, Tennis On Campus offers match play, regional and national championship competition while helping students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years.

In addition to servicing current college students, tennisoncampus.com also offers an opportunity for high school tennis players, junior players and their parents to become more informed of the tennis "scene" on a particular campus. The site features team profiles, links to each team’s website and popular Facebook pages. All college club teams are encouraged to visit the website to build or update their profiles, contact one another, share tips and set up matches.

Some of the free downloadable resources available on the site include customizable marketing materials, fundraising resources, tips for tennis club leaders, and a guidebook for starting a club tennis team. The site also lists upcoming tournaments like the USTA Campus Championship – Sectional Events and a countdown to the USTA National Campus Championship in Surprise, Arizona in April 2009.

"We’re thrilled to be able to support the growth of college tennis and having a substantial web presence is a critical piece of our overall strategy," said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. "This website will provide students the relevant information and resources to grow their campus programs."

For more information about setting up a program at your school, seeing what schools offer Tennis On Campus or to set up a match for your school go to www.tennisoncampus.com, or e-mail tennisoncampus@usta.com.

University of Minnesota and North Dakota State Advance to National Tennis On Campus Championships

Ten team from Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota competed at the 2008 USTA Northern Campus Championship held February 2-3 at the Swanson Tennis Center at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.

The University of Minnesota Team A captured first place with a 30-18 win over the University of Minnesota Maroon in the Championship match. Based on National Championship regulations, the University of Minnesota can only take one team to the National tournament, thus North Dakota State also earned a berth to Nationals with a 21-17 win over Gustavus Adolphus in the third-place match. The National Campus Championships are April 17-20, 2008 in Carey, N.C. USTA Northern is assisting both teams by providing a $500 travel stipend for the national event.

Members of the winning University of Minnesota team were Richard Crockett, Mai Lan Leong, Lindsey Schmelzer, Sara Kopolow, Alex King, Michael Perzel and Elizabeth Larson. North Dakota State University's team, captained by Brian Schwandt, included Max Piepkorn, Jeremy Koeplin, Luke Beckerman, Sara Flowers, Melissa Rippy, Alayna Goodin and Lisa Reinbold. The other teams present at the Section Championship were University of Minnesota Gold C, UW-Stout White and Blue teams, North Dakota's Ice Cold Warriors and Red River Avengers and Carleton College.

The Campus Championships use the WorldTeam Tennis format that features no-ad scoring, player substitutions and allows for coaching at any time. Matches may be sent into overtime if the trailing team wins the fifth set of the match but is behind in total games. In overtime, the trailing team may attempt to tie the match by continuing play and winning enough games even the score. If a tie is reached, a supertiebreaker (first team to 7, win by one) is played to determine the match winner.

Aaron Kurth, captain of the UW-Stout teams, won the USTA Northern Tennis Ace Award. Aaron received a free Wilson racquet donated by Tennis Warehouse. Kurth has showed a tremendous amount of leadership and love of the game, starting a Tennis on Campus team at Wisconsin-Madison before transferring to UW-Stout. He then started his second Tennis on Campus club team at UW-Stout, where last year his team took second at the Section Championships and advanced to Nationals. This year, he has grown the UW-Stout team and brought two teams to the Section Championship. Kurth has done an amazing job organizing Tennis on Campus and growing the game of tennis wherever he goes and will be nominated by USTA Northern for the National NIRSA/USTA Student Tennis Ace Award.

Carleton College received the Team Spirit Award. Carleton College received t-shirts, grips and racquet bags donated by Tennis Warehouse. Carleton team members displayed true enjoyment of playing tennis and demonstrated great sportsmanship through out the weekend. Members of Carleton College team are William Mueller (Captain), Blake Nicholson, Steve Landkamer, Ben Colwell, Aaron Bernhardt, Alexis Perry, Jinai Bharucha, Claire Liepmann and Chelsea Ronsse.
