HOW TO START A TENNIS PROGRAM ON CAMPUS
This information is for recreation professionals and students who want to organize an intramural program or a sport club team. By establishing a program, you will be providing a great service to many former high school and tournament players on your campus who are searching for an organized opportunity to play and connect socially with other students.
WHAT IS THE TENNIS ON CAMPUS FORMAT
The Tennis on Campus format is used by the sections for the Sectional Campus Championships and by NIRSA at the National Campus Championships. The format is very exciting and has become very popular with college students. For your school league, you may make adjustments to suit your needs.TEAMS: Minimum of 4 players (2 men, 2 women) & maximum of 10.
FORMAT: World TeamTennis format consists of men’s and women’s doubles, men’s and women’s singles and one mixed doubles. A match consists of five 6-game no-ad sets with a 9 point set tiebreak (first to 5, win by 1) at 5 games all. Player substitutions are allowed during a set. The total games won determines the winning team. Matches can be sent into Overtime if the trailing team wins the mixed doubles set. In overtime, the trailing team attempts to win enough games to tie up the game score. A Supertiebreaker (first to 7, win by 1) if the match is tied in Overtime. Complete information on the format and rules may be downloaded from the WorldTeam Tennis website.
SCORECARD: The scorecard has all the information players need to run the match. Click here for the " Captain’s Scoring Guide" and "Scorecard ".
FACILITY: A team match requires two courts and two hours to complete.
VARIATIONS: If your program needs to make adjustments to suit your needs, this format can be easily adapted. For example, if you have more men than women, a team could consist of 4 men and 1 woman and the team match would include two men’s doubles positions. If your players wanted to play more tennis, you could have the sets be 8 or 10 game pro sets. If you don’t have two hours to play a match, you could eliminate the singles positions and add another mixed doubles. If you have more time and players do not want to use no-ad scoring, regular scoring could be used.
