Edina and Mounds Park Academy Win Minnesota State Team Championships

Edina won its 13th consecutive Minnesota State High School Class AA Team Championship at Baseline Tennis Center, while Mounds Park Academy won its second title in three years in the Class A division at the Reed Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Sioux Falls Ninth; Mankato 12th At JTT 18s Nationals

The Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala., played host to the 2009 18-And-Under Jr. Team Tennis National Championships October 30-November 1. Sioux Falls finished ninth in the 18 Advanced tournament, while Mankato was 12th in the Intermediate tournament.

Elliott Sprecher Defeats Top Seed; Advances To Quarters At Nike International Tournament

Elliott Sprecher of Cadott, Wis., will not be an unknown anymore in the tennis world after defeating the #1 seed and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Boys 14s at the Nike International Masters series in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Beginning on January 1, 2010, the structure of USTA Northern’s Junior Tournament system will take on a new look. Challenger 1’s and Challenger 2’s will no longer exist. Everything will be one level, starting with Level 3 (our highest level), going down to Level 7 (our entry level).

The coastal city of Mobile, Ala., once again served as the Jr. Team Tennis headquarters of the United States as the Mobile Tennis Center played host to the 2009 Jr. Team Tennis National Championships last weekend. The 14s Advanced and Intermediates played October 23-25.

Sioux Falls O'Gorman won its third straight South Dakota Girls State Team title and also claimed six individual state championships at the 2009 tournament in Sioux Falls. O'Gorman won the team title with 718 points, outlasting second-place finisher Rapid City Stevens who had 668 points. Watertown was third with 477 points.

Elliott Sprecher Wins Boys 14s At Nike Junior National Masters Series

Elliott Sprecher of Cadott, Wis., won the Boys 14s national championship at the Nike Jr. Tour USA National Masters tournament September 18-20 in Stanford, Calif. Sprecher, who was unseeded, defeated the #1, #2, and #3 seeds in claiming the title and becomes the first player in USTA Northern history to win his age group at the Nike tournament.

2009 USTA Northern Award Winners Announced

USTA Northern announced its 2009 winners of 10 different awards, hailing from all corners of the Section which includes Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Northwestern Wisconsin. The honorees will be recognized at the 2009 USTA Northern Award Banquet Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington, Minn. Mark April 9-11, 2010, on your calendar and plan on attending the Tennis Festival of the North. The weekend event will celebrate the game of tennis with both on- and off-court sessions, a vendor fair and a tennis exhibition. The Festival will have a lot of everything for people of all ages and ability levels. This will take the place of the USTA Northern Community Tennis Workshop that is traditionally held in November. Jack Hamburg of Rapid City, S.D., is an eight-time South Dakota State Tennis Champion – 4 titles in singles and 4 in doubles, including the past three years in Flight 1. He’s a four-star college tennis recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net. He is the top-ranked player in Boys 16s for USTA Northern after winning his second consecutive Section singles and doubles championships back in June at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. And he is ranked 95th in the country in Boys 16s.

Grand Forks' Cindy Lim Wins Gold At 2009 National Rapid Rally Event

Grand Forks' Cindy Lim won the gold medal in the 12-13 girls group at the 2009 U.S. Jr. Olympic Skills Rapid Rally Championship at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Gregory Wischer, also of Grand Forks, earned a silver medal in the 12-13 year-old boys event, while Maddie Anderson of Thompson, N.D., won the bronze medal in the 10-11 girls age group.

The USTA today announced explosive growth in its innovative No-Cut Initiative. Since 2006, more than 2,400 high school tennis coaches from across the country have embraced the No-Cut policy, allowing thousands of students who normally would not have been able to play and compete on their high school teams, to play and compete.

The Grand Forks Lord of the Strings won the 14-and-under Jr. Team Tennis National Championship today in Mobile, Ala. The Lord of the Strings defeated a team from Austin, Texas, in the finals. The Hibbing Rangers, who was playing the Intermediate tournament, placed 13th.

David Forbes of Shakopee, Minn., was named the 2008 USTA Northern Jr. Team Tennis Organizer of the Year at the USTA Northern Annual Awards Banquet November 15 at the Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington, Minn. The award recognizes an individual for his or her efforts in expanding an existing Jr. Team Tennis league or developing a new league. Forbes is now eligible for the national Janet Louer Jr. Team Tennis Organizer of the Year Award.

Life Time Fitness - St. Louis Park won the inaugural USTA Northern Jr. Team Tennis 8 & 10s Section Championship using the QuickStart format on Saturday at Life Time Fitness - Lakeville. Five teams participated in the first-ever event as St. Louis Park won an average of 3.45 games per four-game set to finish first, while Williston Tennis Center of Minnetonka was second with 2.83 games per four-game set.
