Edina and Mounds Park Academy Win Minnesota State Team Championships

Sioux Falls Ninth; Mankato 12th At JTT 18s Nationals

The Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala., played host to the 2009 18-And-Under Jr. Team Tennis National Championships October 30-November 1. Sioux Falls finished ninth in the 18 Advanced tournament, while Mankato was 12th in the Intermediate tournament.

New Junior Tournament Structure Beginning in 2010 (Updated 10-28-09)

Beginning on January 1, 2010, the structure of USTA Northern’s Junior Tournament system will take on a new look. Challenger 1’s and Challenger 2’s will no longer exist. Everything will be one level, starting with Level 3 (our highest level), going down to Level 7 (our entry level).

Sioux Falls O'Gorman  won its third straight South Dakota Girls State Team title and also claimed six individual state championships at the 2009 tournament in Sioux Falls. O'Gorman won the team title with 718 points, outlasting second-place finisher Rapid City Stevens who had 668 points. Watertown was third with 477 points.

Elliott Sprecher of Cadott, Wis., won the Boys 14s national championship at the Nike Jr. Tour USA National Masters tournament September 18-20 in Stanford, Calif. Sprecher, who was unseeded, defeated the #1, #2, and #3 seeds in claiming the title and becomes the first player in USTA Northern history to win his age group at the Nike tournament.

USTA Northern announced its 2009 winners of 10 different awards, hailing from all corners of the Section which includes Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Northwestern Wisconsin. Jack Hamburg of Rapid City, S.D., is an eight-time South Dakota State Tennis Champion – 4 titles in singles and 4 in doubles, including the past three years in Flight 1. He’s a four-star college tennis recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net. He is the top-ranked player in Boys 16s for USTA Northern after winning his second consecutive Section singles and doubles championships back in June at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. And he is ranked 95th in the country in Boys 16s.

Life Time Fitness - St. Louis Park won the inaugural USTA Northern Jr. Team Tennis 8 & 10s Section Championship using the QuickStart format on Saturday at Life Time Fitness - Lakeville. Five teams participated in the first-ever event as St. Louis Park won an average of 3.45 games per four-game set to finish first, while Williston Tennis Center of Minnetonka was second with 2.83 games per four-game set.
