About Us

USTA Northern

About USTA Northern:

USTA Northern, a non-profit organization, is one of 17 regional offices of the United States Tennis Association (USTA). USTA Northern was founded on January 9, 1961, as the Northwestern Tennis Association and served Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and the Northwestern section of Wisconsin.

A Board of Directors governs USTA Northern, with its membership including former tennis greats, tennis club personnel, community tennis representatives and executives from companies in the business community. The day-to-day operations of the organization are managed by a staff who reports to the Executive Director, who reports to the President of the Board of Directors. USTA Northern is striving to bring new people into the organization to help administer the services and programs to be provided. The USTA Northern administrative staff, with help from hundreds of volunteers is responsible for rankings, tournament sanctions and schedules, rules, sportsmanship standards, junior development programs, community tennis support, adult tennis leagues and tennis growth in the section.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the governing body of tennis in the United States. The United States is divided into 17 sections by geography. USTA Northern is composed of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and a small portion of Wisconsin. We are organized as a 501c (4). Changes in USTA bylaws are considered and voted on at the USTA Annual Meeting in March and/or at the USTA Semi-Annual meeting in September. At the national level each section has one voting delegate, but voting power is weighted by USTA membership. In terms of membership, USTA Northern is the third smallest section. Within USTA Northern, voting power is constituted in Organizational Members. Each Organizational Member has one vote.

A sectional elected Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the business of the section. The sectional office is located at the Life Time Fitness facility in Bloomington, Minn. The section has a staff of 12 people located in the section office, three working out of their homes in the Twin Cities area and one staff member (Tennis Service Representative) located in Fargo, N.D.

Our core programs are USTA Leagues, School Tennis, Jr. Team Tennis, Tennis in the Parks and Junior and Adult Tournaments. Other programs that we support include CTA Development, NJTL, Collegiate Tennis, Corporate Tennis, Innovative Tournaments, Special Events, Adaptive Tennis and High School Play. Our primary focus is teaching, mentoring and coaching individuals and organizations that grow tennis. In other cases, we conduct programming including tournaments, leagues and special events. To help in reaching diverse participants, we partner with organizations whose focus and mission meets these demographics.

Our Strategic Plan
The function of the USTA Northern Strategic Plan is to provide continuity of direction and purpose to the Association over an extended period of time. The USTA Northern Strategic Planning Committee developed this Strategic Plan with input from every level of the USTA Northern Family. The Plan was approved by the USTA Northern Board of Directors at its December 2006 meeting.

The Plan articulates the mission and vision of USTA Northern, and sets forth our core values, goals and strategic priorities. The elements of the Plan determine the direction as well as permeate the actions and thinking of every activity within USTA Northern. The goals and strategic priorities constitute a commitment to achieving the mission statement and guide decision-making. Additionally, the Plan includes a situation analysis, which describes the current state of our organization; objectives, critical issues, and strategies for accomplishing our priorities. The attached appendices provide definitions of planning terms, a planning calendar and a visual image of the relationship of elements of strategic planning.
