· The USTA Northern ranks 5th among the 17 USTA sections in percent of all individuals who have played tennis in the past year.
· Tennis is the only traditional sport reporting an increase in participation (30.6%) during the past 6 years.
· A 2004 national championship survey of USTA League Tennis players documented demographics of those participants including 78% between the ages of 30 – 59.
Further, 69% had household incomes of $75,000 or more, with 30% reporting $150,000 or more.
· Currently, the Section has over 12,400 members and 230 organizational members. 53% of USTA Northern members are male and 47% are female players.
Tennis Facts
· Tennis is the only traditional sport to have a positive participation change since 2000, growing 30.6% according to the 2007 Tennis Health Index.
· Total tennis players numbered 25 million in 2007, while frequent players (players who play more than 21 times a year) saw a 15% increase.
· 6.1 million new players began participating in tennis in 2006.
· Racquet shipments have grown 42% since 2004 and tennis ball shipments are up 15% during that same time.
· Just over 65% of all tennis players are ages 13-44. There are as many players ages 13-24 as there are players 25-44.
· The 2009 US Open attendance set an all-time attendance record of 721,059 fans topping last year’s record of 720,227. US Open attendance has grown by more than
120,000 since 2000.
· US Open Series television viewership topped 55.8 million for the first time in 2009, more than doubling in the four years since the Series launch.
USTA Northern Facts
· USTA Northern Jr. Team Tennis participation increased by 9% in 2008, while the total number of teams was up over 30%.
· USTA League Tennis participation grew by 11% in 2008. Areas that showed large increases were Duluth (+55%), Fargo (+72%), Rapid City (+56%), Rochester (+8%) and the Twin Cities (+11%).
· A total of 497 coaches and teachers completed training through Recreational Coach Workshops, QuickStart Tennis Workshops, and School In-Services in 2008, an increase of 27% over 2007 numbers.
· Player retention in the USTA League Tennis program continues to rise and was at a high of 72% in 2008.
· The number of matches played at sanctioned adult tournaments in 2008 was up 13% over 2007, while the total number of players was up 1.5%.
· There were over 100 sanctioned junior tournaments in 2008 and the number of players registered for these events was up over 19%.
· The number of unique visitors to the USTA Northern website was up 108% over 2007 traffic.
· USTA Northern membership is over 12,400 members, the most in the last five years. In addition, there are 226 USTA member organizations in the section, up 10% from 2007 numbers.
