2013 Aquatennial Tournament Recap

Day 10 Results
Congratulations to Melanie Yates who won both the singles and doubles championships today on the final day of the 2013 Canadian Pacific Aquatennial Tennis Classic presented by Lipton Tea & Honey.
 
Yates avenged her 2012 loss in the finals to Hannah Dake, defeating her this year 6-4, 6-4. Yates earned $750 for the victory.
 
In doubles, Yates and Sierra Halverson beat the sister team of Laurel and Sierra Krebsbach 6-3, 6-3.

Day 9 Results
Tony Larson claimed his fifth Aquatennial Tennis Classic men's singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Avery Ticer Thursday at the 2013 Canadian Pacific Aquatennial Tennis Classic presented by Lipton Tea & Honey. Larson took home $750 for the win.
 
The men's doubles team of Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins won their second title 6-4, 6-3 over Raoul Schwark and Hamish Weerasinghe. Osorio/Wilkins also claimed the 2011 doubles title.
 
The mixed doubles team of Hannah Dake and Kevin Whipple claimed their first Aquatennial mixed title with a 7-5, 6-2 win over top seeded Alexa Palen and John Pratt.
 
The tournament concludes on Friday with the women's doubles final at 10:00 a.m., followed by the women's singles finals at 12:15 p.m. There will also be a 10 and Under orange ball demonstration between matches.

Day 8 results
Congratulations to the mixed team of Hannah Dake and Kevin Whipple, men's singles players Avery Ticer and Tony Larson, the women's doubles team of Laurel and Sierra Krebsbach and the men's doubles teams of Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins and Hamish Weerasinghe and Raoul Schwark who all advanced to the finals.
 
Dake and Whipple lost the first set 6-4, but then made a valiant comeback to take the second set 7-5 and won the match tiebreaker 10-6 over Doug Matuska and Courtney Norman. Dake and Whipple, the No. 2 seeds, will face top seeds Alexa Palen and John Pratt Thursday at 10 a.m. in the finals.
 
Defending champion Larson made quick work of Gary Notkin, winning 6-1, 6-0. Larson, who is looking for his fifth Aquatennial title in six years, will face Ticer who beat Scott Butler 6-2, 6-2. The men's final is scheduled for 12 noon.
 
Osorio and Wilkins, who won the tournament in 2011, defeated Nick Crossley and Josh Heiden 6-3, 7-6. Osorio and Wilkins will now play Raoul Schwark and Hamish Weerasinghe in the doubles final on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Schwark and Weerasinghe beat two-time champions John Schollmeier and Kevin Whipple 6-4, 7-6.
 
The sister act of Laurel and Sierra Krebsbach defeated Callee Conda and Jessa Richards 6-3, 6-3 and will now play Sierra Halverson and Melanie Yates in the finals on Friday at 10 a.m. Yates and Hannah Dake will play in the women's singles final at 12:15 on Friday.

Melanie Yates advanced to the doubles and singles finals on Day 7 of the 2013 Canadian Pacific Aquatennial Tennis Classic presented by Lipton Tea & Honey at Canadian Pacific Plaza. Yates and her partner Sierra Halverson defeated Molly Bruenig and Sara Humann 6-4, 7-5. Yates followed that by defeating Adele Henke in the singles semifinals 6-4, 6-4.
 
Yates will now play Hannah Dake in the finals in a rematch of the 2012 finals, which Dake won. Dake moved on to the finals by beating Laurel Krebsbach 7-5, 6-1. Yates and Dake play Friday at 10 a.m., followed by the women's doubles finals at 12:15 p.m.
 
Gary Notkin earned a semifinal berth with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over John Pratt. Notkin now faces top-seed Tony Larson at 12 noon on Wednesday.
 
There are six semfinal matches on Wednesday, with matches starting at 9 a.m.

Week two started with a thriller as Raoul Schwark and brother-in-law Hamish Weerasinghe defeated Dusty Boyer and Tony Larson 1-6, 6-4, 18-16 in the opening match at the 2013 Canadian Pacific Aquatennial Tennis Classic presented by Lipton Tea & Honey at Canadian Pacific Plaza.
 
The top seeds in mixed doubles, Alexa Palen and John Pratt, advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Scott Butler and Susanna Styve.
 
Top-seeded Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins showed why they won this tournament two years ago with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Manfred Barrios and Dan Nabedrick 6-1, 6-3, while three-time champions John Schollmeier and Kevin Whipple moved on to the semifinals with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win over Gary Notkin and Noah Sprinkel.
 
Lipton_and_QueenIn the final match of the day, Molly Bruenig and Sara Humann advanced to the semifinals of women's doubles with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 win over Ann Eliason and Bernadette McCann, who were a last minute replacement for Colee Schroeder and Katie Resch as Schroeder tore her calf muscle last week.
 
Matches begin Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with Bruenig and Humann playing Melanie Yates and Sierra Halverson. That will be followed by the women's singles semifinals and then a men's singles quarterfinals at 3 p.m.

Tony Larson began his quest for his fifth title in six years on Day 4 of the 2013 Canadian Pacific Aquatennial Tennis Classic presented by Lipton Tea & Honey. Larson defeated Michael Coleman in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-0.
 
Scott Butler also advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Robert Turlington.
 
In an awesome doubles match, the duo of Nick Crossley and Josh Heiden defeated Julian Dehn and Eric Donley 7-6 (6), 6-1.
 
The top mixed doubles team of Alena Palen and John Pratt survived against Kyle Buchmeier and Dilcia Pederson 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) and the doubles team of Callee Conda and Jessa Richards beat Courtney Norman and Susanna Styve 6-2, 6-1.
 
There are two matches scheduled on Friday, starting at 10 a.m.

The team of Manfred Barrios and Dan Nabedrick moved on to the main draw with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tyler Krumholz and Matt Makis. Also, the duo of Gary Notkin and Noah Sprinkel will play in the main draw after besting Spencer Jones and Doug Matuska 6-4, 6-4.
 
Matuska is still alive in mixed doubles as he and partner Courtney Norman defeated Sara Humann and Mike Vidmar 7-6 (3), 3-6, 1-0 (9). Matuska/Norman now play #2 seeds Hannah Dake and Kevin Whipple, who beat Taylor Hanson and Colee Schroeder 6-1, 6-1. Scott Butler and Susanna Styve also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Mitch Brandell and Callee Conda.

Day 2 Results

Rain forced the first three matches of the day indoors to Baseline Tennis Center, but that did not stop Michael Coleman and Nathan Tretsven from advancing to the main draw with victories today. Coleman defeated Mitchel Brandell 6-3, 6-0, while Tretsven beat Troy Foss 6-0. 6-0. Coleman now faces top seed Tony Larson in the main draw on Thursday at 12 noon, while Tretsven will play former Gopher great Avery Ticer on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

The doubles team of Spencer Jones and Doug Matuska moved to the next round with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Michael Fields and Garrett Foley. Jones and Matuska will now play Gary Notkin and Noah Sprinkel who handled Grant Campbell and Luke Kleckner 6-3, 6-1, once matches moved back downtown to Canadian Pacific Plaza. In the final match of the day, Dan Nabedrick and Manfred Barrios beat Mike Johnson and Sandy McLeod 6-4, 6-1 on a gorgeous night for tennis.

Matches begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday as the mixed doubles main draw begins with Sara Humann/Mike Vidmar facing Matuska/Courtney Norman. That is followed by #2 seeds Hannah Dake/Kevin Whipple taking on Taylor Hanson and Colee Schroeder at 12 noon. Day 1 Results

Troy Foss and Mitchel Brandell advanced to the semifinals of the qualifying draw on Day 1 of the 2013 Canadian Pacific Aquatennial Tennis Classic presented by Lipton Tea & Honey.

Foss, who works for Canadian Pacific, defeated Tamil Perumal 6-4, 6-3, while Brandell, from Elk River, Minn., beat Ben Hogan 6-7, 6-1, 10-8.

Other winners on Monday included Mike Johnson and Sandy McLeod who defeated Mike Boardman and Rob Mairs 6-2, 7-5. Michael Fields and Garrett Foley won a three-set thriller defeating Bill Stark and Mike Vidmar 2-6, 7-5, 10-4, while Tyler Krumholz and Matt Makis beat Kyle Buchmeier and Taylor Hanson 6-4, 7-5.

Play continues at Canadian Pacific Plaza on Tuesday starting at 9 a.m. (in case of inclement weather, play will be moved to Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota).

Brandell plays Michael Coleman at 9 a.m., followed by Foss and Nathan Tretsven at 10:30 a.m. Manfred Barrios and Dan Nabedrick face Johnson and McLeod at 12 noon, followed by Fields and Foley versus Spencer Jones and Doug Matuska at 1:30 p.m. The final match of the day features Gary Notkin and Noah Sprinkel against Grant Campbell and Luke Kleckner.

Many of USTA Northern’s best tennis players are competing for over $5,000 in prize money in men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles. Scheduled to play are men’s defending singles champion Tony Larson, and former Gopher #1 player Avery Ticer. Larson, who won the 2013 US Open Northern Section qualifier two weeks ago, has won the Aquatennial Tournament four of the last five years. Also, back in 2013 are the 2011 men’s doubles champions and former University of Minnesota players Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins and three-time Aquatennial champions John Schollmeier and Kevin Whipple. Coming back to defend her 2012 women’s singles title is Hannah Dake, who plays at the Air Force Academy was named the national winner of the 2013 Women's ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. Current Gopher Alexa Palen and her partner John Pratt are the #1 seed in mixed doubles, while current college players Sierra Halverson (SIU-Edwardsville) and Melanie Yates (Gonzaga) are the top seeds in the women’s doubles draw.


The qualifying tournament is July 8-10 at Canadian Pacific Plaza, followed by the main draw, July 10-19. The men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles finals are set for July 18 beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by the women’s singles and doubles finals on July 19 beginning at 10:00 a.m.
